Tuscany is the historical land called Etruria and originally inhabited by the Etruscans. The Romans conquered it, and it became part of the Roman Empire (281 BC). From 406 A.D., it was invaded successively by Italian and Germanic tribes.

From 553 in the Byzantine Empire from 568 - Lombards from 776 - Franks as marchia. From X to XI C., the communes of Lucca, Siena, Florence, and others separated. Since the fifteenth century Florence and subordinated to the speakers of the Medici. Since 1569 the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

After the expiry of the Medici dynasty in 1737, the power passed into the hands of Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. After the conquest of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1801, the Kingdom of Etruria was created. In the years 1807-1809 Tuscany was part of France. In 1809, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Napoleon Bonaparte gave Eliza, and in 1814 returned to the throne of Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty.

From March 22, 1860 has entered into the composition of a united Italy. The Tuscan dialect became the basis for the Italian language. The region is one of the most important tourism centers in the world. Regional cuisine and wine are very popular, widely expanded agritourism has a wide base. Monuments and world-renowned museums attract visitors from around the world.

The mild climate allows for quite a long tourist season, which lasts from Easter to October. In 1737 Tuscany with Florence was subordinated to sideline the Austrian Habsburgs. In the years 1801-1808 Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Etruria. Since 1860, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, the capital of United Italy in the years 1865-1870. On 4 November 1966 a great flood hit Florence, the waters of the River Arno. The flood destroyed many valuable monuments.
